OUR NATION

Our Story & History

Welcome to Kiciwapa Cree Nation, located in the remote and beautiful northwest region of Manitoba. As Woodland Cree people, our connection to the land, lakes, rivers, forests and animals remains strong and unbroken. Our traditions, culture, and history are central to who we are, and we strive to honour them in everything we do.

Our Treaty 6 adhesion Territory shares borders with the 1875 Treaty 5 Territory of Opaskwayak Cree Nation and Mosakahiken Cree Nation to the South, Pimicikamak Cree Nation to the East, and Mathias Colomb Cree Nation to the North. In 1898, our ancestors adhered to Treaty 6 a historic agreement grounded in mutual respect and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Our main community, Sherridon, serves as the heart of our Nation. It is a place where our people gather, celebrate, and support one another. Sherridon is our home, a place where our people have remained steadfast, rooted in the land through every rise and fall. While the town of Sherridon experienced cylcles of boom and bust, our connection to this land has never wavered. It is here that our ancestors walked, where our stories live, and where we continue to honour our enduring relationship with the land.

With pride and self-determination, Kiciwapa Cree Nation is building a thriving future, firmly guided by the wisdom of our traditions.

Our Traditional Lands

Our ancestral territory extends across northern Manitoba, spanning from the lakes and forests around Snow Lake, through the Sherridon area and Reindeer Lake, up toward the region north of Flin Flon and all along the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. It includes the lakes, islands, traplines, forests, and camp areas our families continue to use today.

Culture & Language

Rooted in Cree Knowledge

Our culture shapes how we make decisions, care for the land, and support our community.

These teachings guide us every day.

We honour:

  • Elders and Knowledge Keepers — the carriers of stories, laws, and guidance

  • Seasonal teachings — learning from the land as it changes

  • Cree language revitalization — bringing back Cree words, names, and ways of speaking

  • Land-based practices — hunting, fishing, harvesting, and being on the land

  • Gathering and community connection — creating spaces to learn, heal, and share

  • Storytelling — passing down history, truth, and identity
